Marley reference photo. I use the grids to help transfer the image onto the paper. I draw another grid on the back of the paper I'm working on, and then put it on a light board.
Starting to make some real progress. I've been putting off the snout, (not sure why). Getting the shape right on a dog's noses can be a challenge.
After the image is lightly sketched onto the paper, I start blocking in shapes and colors.
A lot more work on the ears
Further work laying in base colors. The wet mark by the eye on the left is where I've used a solvent to help blend the colored pencil.
I sent this process shot to the owner for approval, she was very positive. Now I'm starting to try and establish both the shape and texture of the fur, and also finding the range of values. I try to avoid using black, except for the darkest portion of shadows - and look for all the other colors that can be found and mixed.
I usually start with the eyes - but I wanted to work from the top of the ears down. I've found it helps the paper stay more clean.
